I just watched Andrew McCarthy’s documentary, BRATS, streaming now on Hulu and I loved every minute of his story telling. If you grew up in the 80's, I highly recommend watching this gem of our childhood. If you didn't grow up in the 80's, I still recommend watching this poignant decade in time. The Brat Pack defined an important time in cinematic history and while a New York Magazine journalist labeled this talented group, the Brat Pack, they persevered.
The Brat Pack were my people all through the 1980’s. It was my coming of age and each member became a part of my inner circle, unbeknownst to them.
I remember vividly watching all of the 80’s movies, including Taps, Class, St. Elmo’s Fire and of course every John Hughes movie... multiple times!
Those iconic movies defined me in so many ways, including my big 80’s hair, but they also shaped who I was in my teen years and who I became as an adult. I wouldn't have it any other way... except for maybe the hair. It was hot in the Summer!
Funny, I can recite every word to Sixteen Candle and I’m guessing my peers can too. Lines like: What's happenin', hot stuff? and That's why they call them crushes. If they were easy, they'd call 'em something else. Just to name a few. I can also quote the other movies as well.
These culturally profound movies came at a time before there were cell phones, the internet and social media.
Life was simple and pure back then… we were only molded by movies, television, pop culture magazine and taling with friends on landline phones. While we were teens in turmoil… a rights of passage for the age… we didn’t have the added unnecessary pressures of what modern technology would bring. For that, I will always be grateful.
Thank you Andrew McCarthy for always being part of my BRAT pack for decades. I won’t ever forget about you and the others Brat Packers. I relate and cherish you all.
See you peeps in the next post…. Until then, I’m off to watch Pretty In Pink.
Don’t you forget about me…. please.
