I just stumbled upon the first album I ever purchased…. Shaun Cassidy’s 1977 self-titled album! I was nine years old when I purchased it from the iconic Record Theatre in Buffalo... and I was so in loveeeee with this crooning specimen of a man. If you look closely, you can see I claimed my man on the album cover. We were an item in my young mind.
A little history about my unwavering admiration: I plastered my entire wall with my beau's posters as well as all the articles published in Tiger Beat magazine. I’m not even ashamed to say, I kissed Shaun's posters every night before bed and after singing Barry Manilow’s “Can’t Smile Without You” to my wall of Shauns. Every. Single. Night. Again, I was nine years old, though, I'm pretty sure I would still do it today. Love runs deep.
All that said, I currently have Shaun’s songs in rotation on my iPhone and I car-sing every word to every song. “Hey Deanie” and “Caroline’s Comin’ Home” are two of my favorites, but I belt-out all of his musical gems.
It was Saturday, April 15, 1978, when my dreams came true. My cousin Jill and I went to Shaun Cassidy’s concert at the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium.
Now, I am not sure if I actually heard any songs other than his opening mesmerizing. opening number (It’s Only rock And Roll), because I screamed throughout the entire show, along with 17,000 other adolescent girls. My dad and Uncle Dick (Jill’s dad) said for years, it was the loudest place they’ve ever been and they even left the venue during the concert for some audible relief. They magically returned for the encore and took us to the section behind the stage so we could get a closer look at Shaun. My dad was the best and my Uncle Dick is still. I surely will never forget the up close and personal views of my Shaunie.
While the concert was decades ago, the memories remain fresh in my mind (don’t ask me what I did yesterday, I won’t be able to tell you). But, I can tell you everything about that show. You never forget your firsts.
Please comment below… and tell me about the first concert you went to and let’s take this momentous trip down memory lane together! I can not contain my excitement!
Rock on,
Rach
